Mwamba Rugby Club’s Mike Okello is scheduled to miss the opening matches of the Kenya Cup 2021/22 season due to suspension.

According to the Judicial decision made on 31 October 2021 published by KRU on Friday, the forward was handed a four-week suspension during the Safari 7s Tournament held on Saturday and Sunday at Nyayo Stadium following his high tackle on a Ugandan player as his side Samurai suffered a 17-14 loss in the fifth-place semis on Sunday.

According to the Judicial Panel report, his offence warranted a red card and not a yellow card which was awarded by the centre referee Precious Pazani.

Okello was found guilty of contravening law 9.13 which states: “A player must not tackle an opponent early, late or dangerously. Dangerous tackling includes, but is not limited to, tackling or attempting to tackle an opponent above the line of the shoulders even if the tackle starts below the line of the shoulders.”

This saw him handed a six-week ban was later reduced to four weeks following his immediate plea of guilt which saved the Panel’s time, remorse, and cooperation during the hearing.

Having missed the Safari 7s fifth-place final, Okello still has three weeks to serve. He is set to miss the first three games of the season with his suspension set to run till 11 December 2021.

The player is however free to appeal the decision.
