WORLD SEVENS SERIES

USA edge Kenya 7s in Edmonton 7s final Pool B match

USA beat Kenya 7s 19-14 in the final Pool B match of the Edmonton 7s played at Commonwealth Stadium on Sunday morning.

Both Kenya 7s and USA had already booked their places in the quarters prior to this match but were keen to maintain their winning run.

The last meeting between Kenya 7s and USA was last weekend where Shujaa beat the Eagles 19-14 to reach the last four.

USA managed revenge scoring in the final minute of the game to win.

The Eagles scored first through Malacchi Esdale after four minutes of play. His try was converted for a 7-0 lead. The side doubled the lead with the ball being shifted to the left and Esdale put USA playmaker Kevon Williams through with a loop at the outside for the second try.

In the second half, Captain Nelson Oyoo pulled back after Kenya won a scrum in USA’s territory. The captain received the ball and a darting run saw him race on for the first try for Shujaa. It was Oyoo’s 50th try in the World 7s Series and was converted by Levy Amunga for a 12-7 trail.

Kenya would lead for the first at the 10th minute when Billy Odhiambo picked a loose ball and raced on to score. Levy Amunga belted in a conversion from the right side for a 14-12 lead.

USA stole the ball from a Kenyan lineout and quickly attacked and scored through Martin Iosefo in the final minutes of the game. Jerome Nale added a conversion for a 19-14 win.

Spain finished third in Pool B following a 40-19 win over Chile. They will wait for the final matches to know if they will play in the quarters.

In Pool A, South Africa and Canada have booked quarterfinal slots before their final pool match. They two picked huge wins in their second matches with South Africa whipping Hong Kong 43-5.

Muller du Plessis and captain Siviwe Soyizwapi scored a brace each. Ronald Brown, Sakoyisa Makata and Selvyn Davids also scored in the win.

Canada also whipped Mexico 47-0 with Thomas Isherwood scoring three tries. Anton Ngongo and Ciaran Breen landed two tries each.

Ireland once again topped pool C after a 12-12 draw against Great Britain. This result sees Germany who whipped Jamaica 55-5 proceed to the quarters while GB will wait for the final match to know their fate.
