Kenya 7s whip Ireland to finish ninth in Tokyo Olympics

Kenya 7s finished ninth at the Tokyo Olympics beating Ireland 22-0 in the ninth playoff played at Tokyo Stadium.

The match marked Andrew Amonde’s final appearance in the Olympics with Kenya 7s. It was a slight improvement from 2016 where Kenya finished 11th.

There was no breakthrough for either side in the opening five minutes. Kenya 7s however struck before halftime when Johnstone Olindi spotted a gap and quickly raced on to score the opening try. The try was converted taking the scores to 7-0.

In the second half, Quick hands by Collins Injera and Billy Odhiambo set up Jacob Ojee who powered into the try box at the left corner for the second try.

Injera also started the build-up to the third by stealing the ball from the Irish men and offloaded to Ojee. Ojee paced on released Herman Humwa who linked up with Daniel Taabu and the halfback picked Willy Ambaka with a pass for the third try.

Taabu scored the final try, rising from a scrum and sprinted on for a try. Amonde making his final Olympic appearance missed the conversion as Kenya won the clash with 22 points.
