2016 Gold winners Fiji will face off with New Zealand in the Tokyo Olympics final at Tokyo Stadium at 9:00 PM Fijian Time as they seek to bag another Gold in the Olympics.
To reach the final, Gareth Baber coached side beat Argentina 26-14 to set up a repeat of the Oceania 7s final which Fiji emerged top.
Sireli Maqala’s individual brilliance saw him score a solo effort try for a 7-0 lead for Fiji. Meli Derenalagi then crossed over for the second try to change the scores to 12-0.
Youngster Marcos Moneta trimmed the gap for Argentina with a try that Mare Santiago converted. Ignacio Mendy then scored at the left corner for the Argentines and Mare belted in a conversion from a tight angle for a 14-12 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Jiuta Wainiqolo crossed over for Fiji’s third try and Jerry Tuwai converted for a 19-14. Semi Radradra scored a try that put the game beyond Argentina’s reach.
Their opponents, New Zealand reached the final after seeing off Great Britain with a 29-7 victory. Scott Curry opened the scores for All Blacks 7s before Andrew Knewstubb converted for a 7-0 lead. GB responded through speedster Dan Norton.
Regan Ware restored New Zealand’s seven-point lead after his try was converted by Knewstubb for a 14-7 scoreline at halftime.
New Zealand proved superior in the final half, scoring via Ware (2nd try), Dylan Collier and Curry (2nd try).
Great Britain who won Silver in the 2016 Olympics will play Argentina in the Bronze final.
South Africa and USA will face off again in the chase for the fifth place as Canada and Australia battle for the seventh spot.
