MMUST-Kenya Harlequins share spoils at Nandi Bears

MMUST Rugby Club held Kenya Harlequins to a 17-17 draw in a Kenya Cup match staged at Nandi Bears Club Saturday noon.

Kenya Harlequins who are winless since March 13, 2021 failed to hold on to a seven-point lead in the final minutes of the clash. They conceded a try in the final minutes which saw their winless run stretch to four matches.

The match commenced with a minute of silence in honour of departed referee Peter Mbithi Leo who died after a road accident on Mombasa Road on Thursday.

MMUST began the clash strongly and put Kenya Harlequins on the backfoot and a lapse in concentration saw scrum-half Keith Imbwaga beat his markers and raced on to score the opening try. Norbert Lumbwani cooly added the conversion to hand the students an early lead.

Quins would mount pressure in search of an equalizer but the Makaka’s held on. MMUST stretched the lead with a three-pointer from Lumbwani after they were awarded a penalty.

Kenya Harlequins responded with two tries to take a 14-10 lead to the break. Centre Leroy Kamau crossed over for their opening try which was converted for a 10-7 trail. Back-rower Kevin Angote ensured the side led at halftime after landing a try which was also converted for a 14-10 scoreline.

From the halftime break, Quins’ Allan Odiyo added three more points from the tee to widen their gap to seven points.

MMUST efforts to trim the gap were hampered by a missed penalty. Their chase for an equalizer later bore fruits towards the end of the half with Jadah Abdon going over to hand MMUST the second try of the clash.

Lumbwani added the extras to tie the scores at 17-17. Both sides head home with two points each.
