Monate Akuei wins Big Apple Cup with Old Blue in USA

Old Blue Rugby Club home to Kenya International Monate Akuei’s scooped the Big Apple trophy after beating New York Athletic 39-14 in the final round of the season played on Sunday at Belson Stadium.

Akuei who started on the blind flank scored one try in the opening half as his side picked the fifth win in the six matches played in the 2021 campaign. The try saw him end the campaign with eight tries in five appearances for the American Rugby Premiership side which he joined in Mid April.

The side picked 26 points from their six matches. The lone loss of the season was in their away match against White Plains which ended 34-26. The 2021 campaign had only four teams participating.

Commenting on the season, Akuei said he enjoyed the season and he is honoured to have capped it off with a trophy.

“I loved the 15s season with them, winning the Big Apple cup is such a great honor and doing it with these bunch of athletes makes it even more enjoyable. What a team!” Akuei told the Scrummage.

The teams are set to shift their focus on the shorter version set to commence next weekend.

“Can’t wait for the 7s season which starts immediately next weekend on the 19. Looking forward to more championships,” he added.
