Ex-Kenya U20 back makes cameo appearance in Italy U20’s loss to France

Former Kenya Under 20 back Michele Brighetti came off the bench as Italy Under 20 squad lost 34-30 to France in a build-up match played on Friday ahead of the Six Nations Under 20 Tournament.

Brighetti, a 2019 Rugby Africa Barthes Cup winner with Kenya Under 20 squad was introduced at the 62nd minute. He was sent on at the inside centre in the place of Fabio Schiabel and played 18 minutes in the defeat.

The youngster was handed the first call up to Italy Under 20 squad in January 2020 and played in two Six Nations matches before the season was interrupted due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Michele is the son of former Nondies player Marco Brighetti. He plays for Accademia Nazionale “Ivan Francescato” in Italy. He is still eligible to play for Kenya Simbas or Italy senior team.

In the match against France staged at Stade La Seyne Sur Mer, wingers Filippo Lazzarin, Flavio Pio Vaccari, Leonardo Marin scored a try each while Marin added a drop goal for Italy to lead 20-15 heading to the break. In the closing half, Garbisi added a three-pointer and a try through Teneggi saw Italy hit the 30-point mark.

The French youngsters, however, fought hard to come back in the game and scored a late winner through Foursans. The teams will kick off their Six Nations campaign from 19th June to 13th July in Cardiff.

The decision to hold the Championship in one venue was taken to reduce the risk around travel, to ensure greater rest periods and structured training and therefore meet many of the performance opportunities lost in recent times.

Matchday squads will consist of 26 players due to the condensed format of the competition and all five matchdays will feature three matches played consecutively.
