Zimbabwe Sables defeat Zambia in Battle of Zambezi clash

Zimbabwe Sables beat Zambia 31-8 in a friendly match dubbed the Battle of Zambezi played on Wednesday at Harare Sports Club.

The Sables who recently received Sponsorship worth 120, 000 USD, (Kshs 12.9 M) from Nedbank for their World Cup qualification push scored five tries with four coming in the first half and one in the closing half.

Waikato Rugby Centre Brandon Mudzekenyedzi announced his arrival in the team by scoring a try on his debut. Eighth man Aiden Burnett added the second try which was converted for a 12-0 lead.

Doug Juszczyk who was also making his debut at loosehead prop crossed over for the third try and a conversion saw the scoreboard change to 19-0. The side added a five-pointer to lead 24-0 at halftime.

Juszczyk scored the lone try of the second half and it was converted for a 31-8 win. The Sables will be back in action on Saturday for another clash against the Zimbabweans. The Sables will then play Namibian Welwitschias in a home-and-away tie a week later.

They will then play against Blue Bulls Select in July as they wind up the preparations for the Africa Cup which also serves as the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.

Zimbabwe’s Under 20 squad completed a double over their Zambia counterparts picking a 46-8 win, Andrew Rinomhota, Benjamin Pattenden, Brooklyn Chikaka, Tawanda Banda, Craig Snyder and Ethan Wilson were the scorers for the youngsters.

Zambia Women won 31-22 against the Zimbabwe won.
