Shimo La Tewa scooped the KSSSA Mombasa County Rugby 7s and 15s titles in the matches played on Thursday and Friday at their backyard.
To retain the 15s, the side was in a fine form whipping Moi Forces Academy 39-0 in the opening match. Their second match saw them thrash Tononoka 47-0. A 44-0 win over Khamis was enough to hand them a trophy in the round-robin competition.
The same run was witnessed in the shorter version as they beat Miritini 12-5 in a final played at Shimo La Tewa. Shimo had beaten Allidina 19-5 while Miritini needed extra time to see off Tononoka in the semis.
Shimo la Tewa High School Head Coach John Ngugi says their success at the county level was as a result of early preparation and withstanding pressure.
“The boys gave a good show, they stuck to the game plan and didn’t crack under pressure. Early preparation helped us a lot since the team had been training since last year third term and it paid off,” Ngugi told Scrummage.
As they prepare for the regional games, the coach believes conditioning will be key. He is bracing his charges for the high attitude in Kwale.
“Going forward we just need to work more on the boys conditioning since the weather in Kwale is different from Mombasa, the high altitude is a challenge we are working to overcome,” he added.
It is uncertain if the Regional games will take place on the slated date after the Ministry of Health banned inter-school games.
