Kenya bow out of Cape Town 7s after SA defeat

South Africa have eliminated Kenya 7s from the Cape Town 7s following a 17-5 win in the quarter-finals staged at Cape Town Stadium.

The East African were playing in the quarters for the first time this season after last weekend’s miss. They were seeking to end their bad run against South Africa which had seen them lose the last 13 meetings with the latest loss being a 17-12 at the Dubai 7s pool stage.

The last Kenya beat South Africa in the Series was during the 2015 pool stage match which ended 14-12.

In the match, Kenya struck at the third minute with Nelson Oyoo pouncing on a loose ball to set up Alvin Otieno who raced on to land a try for Shujaa. South Africa then levelled the scores after Ruhan Nel hustled his way to the try line to score at the right side for their five points.

On return for the break, South Africa started off with a high tempo and Rosko Specman kicked the ball behind Kenya 7s defence and Daniel Taabu had to punt the ball out for line-up in his own territory due to pressure . From the line out, Nel received the ball at pace and stretched on to score another try. Justin Geduld added the extras for a 12-7 lead.

South Africa sealed their win after landing a try through Selvyn Davids for a 17-5. Kenya are now out of the competition following the loss and will await the other quarters to know their position and points on the log.
