Onyala’s hat-trick lifts Kenya past Samoa at the London 7s

Kenya 7s bagged the first win at the London 7s after edging Samoa 21-20 in a Pool B match staged at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday 12 May.

Paul Murunga charges had shown some flashes of brilliance in the opening game against Fiji though they lost 24-17 at the end. Their target coming to the clash against Samoa was to revenge a 35-12 defeat suffered at Vancouver 7s.

Samoa took lead through Melani Matavao and Tomasi Alosio but Kenya fought back via of Vincent Onyala’s double. Johnstone Olindi, on the other hand, got his  two conversions right for Kenya to take a 14-10 lead to the break.

In the final half, Laaloi Leilua restored the Samoas lead after unconverted try for a 15-14 lead before Onyala’s third try send Kenya to 21 points.

Alamanda Motuga scored a late try but a conversion miss turned out to be costly for the side. Kenya will now shift focus on a clash against France.
