Kenya 7s needed a later try by Jeff Olouch to beat Japan 31-24 in the 13th place semis played on Sunday morning in Singapore 7s.
Kenya had lost to France 24-14 in the Challenge trophy quarterfinals and needed to beat Japan who are just two points behind them on the series log. Shujaa scored the first try of the clash through former captain Andrew Amonde.
The team was dealt a blow after Nelson Oyoo limped off. Mwamba RFC ace Daniel Taabu, however, added a converted try for Kenya 7s a minute later before Japan pulled one back through Katsuyuki Sakai. Taabu added Kenya’s third try at the sixth minute. Michael Toloke ensured the game was not far from their reach by scoring before halftime.
Before halftime, Olouch would sprint on the left flank to put Kenya ahead but Siosifa Lisala landed two quick tries and leveled the scores at 24-24.
Olouch would save Kenya the blushes after racing to bag a converted try in the final second of the game. Kenya 7s have booked a date with Spain in the 13th place playoffs.
The match is set for 12:14 PM.
