KRU Championship side USIU Martial have retired jersey 11 in memory of departed winger Derrick Obiero.
This means Obiero is the last player at USIU to don jersey 11 and no other player will be allowed to use the jersey number unless the club agrees to have the jersey number available again.
Obiero passed on three weeks ago while at St Francis Hospital in Kasarani Area in Nairobi where he had been taken for treatment. The club announced that he had died due to a brain tumor.
The winger will be laid to rest on Friday 5 April in his Village, Ginga in Rarieda, Siaya County. A statement confirming the resting of the jersey reads:
“Jersey model M1, number 11 will be rested, in memory of our fallen brother
@obiero014 He will be buried on Friday 5th April 2019 in Rarieda-Ginga village, Bondo Siaya county.”

Obiero had a short stint at Kakamega Rugby Club after completing his High School education at Vihiga High School. He later joined Kabras RFC and helped the side gain top-flight status.
He quit Kabras in October 2016 and penned down a deal with USIU.
