End of road for Kenya 7s at Las Vegas 7s

Kenya 7s journey at the Las Vegas 7s came to an end after a 24-7 loss to Spain in the Challenge trophy semi-final clash played at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Spain were looking for the second straight win over Kenya after a 26-19 win at the Dubai 7s Challenge Quarterfinals early this season. For Kenya 7s, they were seeking to register the sixth win over the Spaniards in eight meetings.

Spain scored first in the game through 23-year-old Ignacio Rodriguez-Guerra. Francisco Hernandez added the extras to put his side seven points up.

Spain stretched their lead by scoring at the right corner via Javier Carrion but their conversion attempt went off the target. Bush Mwale cut the gap to five points after a powerful run which saw him go over for Kenya’s first try. Daniel Taabu converted the try for a 12-7 score at the break.

In the final half, Carrion bagged his second try after a quick interchange of passes in Kenya’s territory. Fernandez stretched their lead with a conversion.

With two minutes to go,  Pablo Fontes opened a 17-point gap after crossing over for another try. Spain will now face the winner of the clash pitting Scotland and Chile while Kenya now shifts focus to Vancouver 7s,
