2019 Super Rugby: Highlanders, Jaguares, Waratahs win in round two

The Highlanders ran in a late try to record a victory making it two wins from two for the season as round two of Vodafone Super Rugby kicked off on Friday 22, February 2019.

Highlanders vs Reds

Dillon Hunt’s late try ensured the Highlanders saw off the Reds in a superb Super Rugby clash as the Highlanders once again fought back to set a 36-31 victory in their Super Rugby game against the Reds in Dunedin on Friday.

Winger Chris Feauai-Sautia, scrum-half Moses Sorovi, lock Izack Rodda and debutant prop Feao Fotuaika scored for the Reds, while The Highlanders got two tries from Shannon Frizell while Rob Thompson and Ben Smith also crossed over.

Sunwolves vs Waratahs

Waratahs survived a one point scare over Sunwolves after they inflicted a nail-biting 31-30 defeat on the Sunwolves to raise from last weekend’s 20-19 loss to Hurricanes.

A Folau double, Kurtley Beale and Jack Dempsey tries, a penalty  and extras by Benard Foley were all Waratahs needed to oversee Gerhard van den Heever’s brace, a try from Tom Rowe, three conversions and three penalties by Hayden Parker for Sunwolves.

Crusaders vs Hurricanes

Crusaders made it a record 17 wins in a row with a resilient 38-22 victory over the Hurricanes.

All Blacks duo Richie Mo’unga and Scott Barrett claiming two a piece as Jordan Taufua bagged a solo and George Bridge the hosts final try while Ben Lam scored a brace, TJ Perenara and Wes Goosen a try each for Hurricanes.

Brumbies vs Chiefs

Brumbies, after losing round one to Rebels, had the biggest win of round two to score eight tries to two with Centre Tevita Kuridrani and winger Chance Peni both scoring doubles against Chiefs to destroy them 54 – 17 to their second loss of the season.

Sharks vs Blues

Sharks, with tries from Aphelele Fassi, Akker van der Merwe, Robert du Preez and Curwin Bosch secured second win of the season after beating Blues, Tanielu Telea try,  26-7 to second back-to-back loss.

Stormers vs Lions

Stormers snatched a late victory as replacement halfback Herschel Jantjies scored a try in the extra time as they claimed first win of the season with a 19-17 victory over the Lions at Newlands.

Kwagga Smith and Warren Whiteley crossed for the Lions with Elton Jantjies kicking in two conversions and a penalty as SP Marais scored four penalties and a conversion for the hosts.

Jaguares vs Bulls

Jaguares secured first win of the season as they saw off Bulls 27-12 scoring three tries to none to hand Bulls to first loss of the season, in Buenos Aires.
