Kenya 7s kickoff the Sydney 7s campaign with a 24-14 loss to Canada in a Pool B match at Spotless Stadium in Sydney.
In the past 14 meetings with Canada, Kenya 7s had won seven matches with the last loss being in April 2017 where they fell 17-14 at the Hong Kong 7s. As they faced off in Sydney, Kenya were eyeing the fifth straight win against the North Americans.
In the match, Kenya’s kick-off failed to go past ten metre-line and they were penalized. The Canadians capitalized on a lapse in the defence to score through Cole Davis.
Kenya hit back immediately with Bush Mwale pacing down the right wing to score. Johnstone Olindi’s extras leveled the scores to 7-7.
Davis bagged his brace after forcing his way to the try-line at the sixth minute. They would open a 10 point gap after Connor Braid scored at the right corner.
The Canadians continued to enjoy possession the final half until Kenya 7s won a penalty. Johnstone Olindi touched down at the posts after being released by Mwale.
Phil Berna would bag a converted try in the dying minutes of the game to hand Kenya 7s the first loss at Sydney 7s.
