Nondies end KCB's unbeaten run

Nondies became the first to beat Kenya cup champions KCB in close to 18 months, this after a 27-22 win in a mouth-watering clash in the second match of a doubleheader at the Ruaraka grounds.
KCB who had not lost a single match since March 2017 were playing on a familiar territory in the second match of the afternoon when they faced Nondies in the highly anticipated clash. The visitors were first to strike with skipper Fidel Oloo producing a blistering run to score in the corner, Martin Juma missing the conversion. Nondies seemed the better side dominating play in the early exchanges of the game despite flyhalf Martin Juma being sent to the sinners bin for a dangerous tackle on a bankers’ player.
The champions did not take long to reply as exeperienced Oscar Sorano bullied his way through a couple of Nondies bodies to touch the padding for KCB’s first try. Stephen Osumba slotted in the conversion to make it 7-5.
Nondies showed they had come for serious business when Steve Odhiambo shoved his way over the white chalk to restore their lead on the half hour mark. Brian Oyando missed the extras the game standing at 10-7.
Nondies were dealt another blow when Benjamin Martial was sent off just as Martin Juma was coming on having served his time in the bin.
KCB’s persistent knocking on the other side payed off when Sorano shoved his way over for a try. Stephen Osumba added the extras to make matters 14-10.
With the referee playing extra time, Nondies had other ideas as Ian Mabwa picked up a stray ball, danced through two defenders before offloading to Brian Sinei who had one defender to beat before scoring. Martin Juma’s conversion sailed off the mark leaving matters at 15-14 heading into the break.
KCB started the second half looking sharper and with a killer instinct and it was not long before order was restored at the Lions den. A wide ball to the line opened space on the outside which saw replacement vincent Onyala shrug off the attention of a Nondies defender to dot down in the corner. The resulting conversion successful taking the scores to 22-15.
Nondies fowards continued to show their dominance pushing KCB’s scrum at their own will. It resulted to a yellow card for front rower Jerry Olola who had just come on. A third go at the scrum saw eighth-man Steve Odhiambo pick up the ball and run over the white wash to take Nondies to 20 points with a conversion to come. Moses Begi made no mistake with the conversion bringing matters level. 22-22 were the scores with under twelve minutes to go.
With just six minutes on the clock, Nondies were awarded a penalty opting for a scrum down. Nondies fowards dominated the scrum down again showing power to push their way over the line with Steve Odhiambo dotting down his third try. Begi could not add the extras bringing the scores to 27-22.
Nondies then went on to hold on for a well deserved win. Full time scores 27-22 in favour of Nondies.
