Ayimba blasts KRU over Kenya 7s debacle

Former Kenya 7s coach Benjamin Ayimba has criticized the Kenya Rugby Union over the  fiasco that has hit the  Kenya Sevens team in recent days.
Tourism Cabinet secretary Najib Balala cancelled the sh.20 million ‘Brand Kenya’ sponsorship for the team last week Thursday over blacking out the sponsor’s name in Paris and on the same day, the team’s coach Innocent Simiyu was sacked.
“They don’t understand how it feels. They are riding on backs of people who work so hard to make this happen.Guys who are trying to build a legacy,” Ayimba said in an interview with a local television.
The Kenya 7s drama comes with less than 20 days to the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Fransisco, USA where the side is expected to get their campaign underway with a pre-round of 16 clash against Tonga.
“Can you imagine Collins not playing the World Cup just because someone decided he is not important.Imagine Andrew not playing a good World Cup because someone is impeding it,” The 2016 Singapore 7s winning coach added.
“These are people who have given over 10 years of their lives to the sport. How do you reward them? By chest thumping and being arrogant to them?”
Scrummage understands that as of Friday 22 June, players had not been paid dues owed to them.
“How do you feel when somebody tells you, we have not paid you for three months.. But we got the money from the sponsor and paid our debts..”
“How do you feel? These union guys do not know how it feels for an international star player to have rent arrears,” concluded Ayimba.
