The short and sweet career of 'Namcos' as Kenya 7s head coach

Innocent Simiyu tenure as Shuja’s head coach was terminated by Kenya Rugby Union yesterday following a series of drama that saw Kenya 7s masking off sponsor’s brand name ‘Make it Kenya’ during Paris 7s leg.
‘Namcos’ was appointed the Kenya 7s coach back then in October 2016 replacing Benjamin Ayimba.Just like any other person, Simiyu’s appointment was not welcomed by all as it was received by critics.
Simiyu represented his country in both 15s and 7s version making appearance in 121 matches and ammasing a total of 321 points.
He started his first season rather on a slow start managing to finish at position 12 with 68 points just 3 positions up shy of relegation. The best performance in his first year was in Cape Town where he got 12 points with the lowest being 1 in Paris.
It was in his second season in charge that the 35 year old had mastered the art.The grass started to be greener in November 2017 when Kenya 7s beat South Africa 19-12 in Cup final to be crowned Safland 7s champions.
In 2017/2018 season,he led Kenya to an eighth position having garnered a total of 104 points. He has managed to reach 7 cup quarterfinals. Simiyu picked 10 in Dubai,3 in Cape Town,10 in Hamilton, 12 in Sydney, 10 in Las Vegas,19 on both Canada and Hong Kong, the first time in history making back to back cup final appearance. His lowest was in Paris and Cape Town where he managed only 3 in each.
His sacking comes a time when Shujaa has to prepare for world cup.Already, the players have boycotted the first day of training and who knows for how long that will last. With Kenya having shown some good run of form in the just concluded season, everyone around the globe will be looking to see what Kenya has to give in the San Francisco event.
