Paris 7s: Kenya beats Fiji to remain in contention for cup quarter finals

Kenya remained in main cup contention at the ongoing Paris 7s after beating Fiji 22-19 in their second pool A match staged at the Stade Jean Bouin this Saturday 9 June.
Innocent Simiyu’s charges face Samoa at 7:52 pm and a win  could see them book a slot in Sunday’s quarter finals depending on the outcome of the New Zealand vs Fiji match.
It was a must win match for Shujaa having lost 24-5 to New Zealand in their opener and against the series leaders, they were 15-7 up at the break.
Collins Injera collected the ball from the scrum before crossing the chalk to hand Kenya a five pointer.
Injera would turn provider, setting up Willy Ambaka for Kenya’s second but Agero failed to add the extras.
Andrew Amonde would get his name onto the scoresheet with Kenya’s third unconverted try before Fiji cut the deficit to eight points, Shujaa leading 15-7 at the interval.
Fiji were dealt a numerical blow after Eroni Sau was sent to the sin bin and Kenya capitalized through Erick Ombasa who went over the chalk before Eden Agero converted for a 22-7 lead.
Josua Vakurunabili would bring Fiji to within Kenya’s reach after going over for their second try.
Fiji would get their third try as the match entered the final play but despite a nervy ending, Kenya held on to claim the precious win.
