Unstoppable! MMUST crowned Nationwide champions

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) have been crowned Nationwide champions for the 2017/18 campaign after a 27-6 win over Kitale RFC in the final staged in Kakamega this Saturday 19th May. 
The win over Kitale means that the Ochieng’ Ahaya coached side end the season without tasting defeat.
Heading to Saturday’s final, both MMUST and Kitale had secured KRU Championship promotion where they replace the relegated pair of Moi Arsonists and JKUAT Cougars.
For Nationwide honours,MMUST got onto the scoresheet courtesy of five tries and one conversion as Kitale managed two penalties.
The Kakamega based side started off strongly and after eight minutes of play full back Elvis Amunya touched down for the opening try of the afternoon.
Derrick Okisai failed to add the extras from the boot before Kitale cut the gap to two points after they successfully converted a penalty.
MMUST Skipper Samuel Mbeche went over for his side’s second try to extend the gap to seven points.Amunya would seal his brace with the third try and Okisai’s extras saw the students take a 17-3 lead.
Blindside winger Claus Masika would compound Kitale’s miseries, going over the chalk for a fiver pointer to hand the hosts a 22-3 lead at the break. In the final half skipper Mbeche scored his second following a fantastic run.
Kitale who were having a far from ideal afternoon scored their second penalty to bring the scoreline to 27-6.
MMUST would be dealt a numerical blow as Eli Kahoro was sent off temporarily for an infringement before a Kitale Player was also sinbinned.
Claus Masika and Oksai Derrick were also shown their marching orders,the former as a result of a high tackle on his opponent as MMUST held on to seal a comfortable 27-6 win.
