MMUST eager to uphold fine run

19th May will not be an ordinary date for Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) Rugby faithful. It is a day that could see the Ochieng’ Ahaya coached side decorate their route to the KRU Championship with Nationwide silverware.
The side is set to host Rift Valley side Kitale RFC in the 2017/18 Nationwide final at their Kakamega backyard with both sides having gained Championship promotion.
In an interview with Scrummage, MMUST skipper Samuel Mbeche reckoned that they will be out to approach the match like any other, treating their opponents with caution as they seek to maintain their unblemished run in the third tier.
“We shall treat the match like we have done previously and we are going for nothing short of Nationwide honours. We know our unbeaten run will be on the test and we shall do what it takes to protect the record,”Mbeche said.
“We have decided as a team to dedicate Saturday’s encounter to our fans and the MMUST fraternity at large. Our target at the beginning of the season was to gain promotion to the second tier and I am glad we achieved that,”added Mbeche.
For a place in Saturday’s final,MMUST beat Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) 39-10 in the quarter finals before easing past Eldoret RFC with a 35-0 score.
Kitale’s road to the final was bumpy, as they laboured to a 17-10 win over Kiambu RFC in extra time before slaying a giant in Swara with a 12-8 win in the semi final staged at the Impala Club.
Saturday’s final gets underway at 3:00pm.
