UoE Trojans cry foul after KRU’s reverse on Ngong match ruling

University of Eldoret rugby has decried for not being involved as Kenya Rugby Union reserved their earlier ruling that saw them awarded points for the unplayed tie against Ngong Warriors.

On 16 April the Union through its official portal Kenya Cup announced that the Eldoret based side had been awarded points for the unplayed match against Ngong. Following the ruling the side was to end the season at the ninth spot with 29 points while Ngong was 10th with 18 points.

“The University of Eldoret Trojans have been awarded Saturday’s unplayed KRU Championship clash against Ngong Warriors and now close out the season in ninth place on 29 points. Ngong Warriors will finish the season in tenth place on 18 points after two points were deducted following their decision not to take to the pitch for this match at the UoE ground in Eldoret, read a statement on Kenya Cup.

No official communique

On the current KRU Championship standings, UoE is placed 10th with 22 points while Ngong sits ninth with 25 points.  According to UoE Trojans Team manager Kelvin Mwisheni, the decision was reversed but they were not involved or given an official communication that on the decision.

“Am told that the decision to award us points for the unplayed match against Ngong was reversed. I however do not understand how a team can appeal and the decision is made without involving the other party. I don’t think if it is fair to hear from one party and make the decision and the other party is not aware of anything. I would have been fair if we knew that there was an appeal,” he told the Scrummage.

Change approach

Mwisheni says they side is ready for the weekends tie against Swara but has urged the union to change the approach they use while handling cases to avoid favouring some sides.

“We’re still okay and ready to face Swara on Saturday.  I know even if we’re still given the points it would make no difference. But our concern is to see criteria used by the union to handle cases change. This is one good scenario of favouring teams especially teams from Nairobi who can easily pop in the union offices influence a few guys to get what they want yet we know nothing about it,” he added.

The referee’s report says match failed to kick off after Ngong refused to take on the pitch even after they agreed during the brief that the match would kick off at 430 PM.

UoE will be hoping to keep their place in the second tier as they host Swara at UoE Grounds.
