Late Penalty try secures Kenya Simbas Elgon Cup title

Kenya Simbas had to rely on a late penalty try to salvage a 33 all draw against Uganda Cranes at the RFUEA grounds on Saturday 24th June and lift the Elgon Cup for the second successive year in a match that was also doubling up as a Rugby Gold Cup match.
Uganda started off the match on a high note as Kabras RFC man Philip Wokorach drilled in a penalty for a 3-0 lead.They would extend their lead moments later as Charles Uhuru touched down with Wokorach doing the rest with his boot as they took a comfortable 10-0 lead.Uganda were however dealt a huge blow after their player was sent to the sin bin for a reckless challenge.
Simbas soon hit back with a Darwin Mukidza penalty before his KCB teammate Jacob Ojee touched down to take the scores to 10-8 in favour of the Cranes.Moments later,Moses Amusala crossed the whitewash but Mukidza’s conversion went agonisingly wide as the match went to the break with Kenya leading 13-10.
On resumption,Kenya extended their lead to 16-10 as Mukidza drilled in a penalty but the Ugandans would not go down easily as Wokorach who was having a great afternoon reduced the deficit with two penalties in quick succession.Jacob Ojee then received a wonderful pass on the flank and touched down for his second of the afternoon,taking the scores to 23-16 in favour of Kenya.
Uganda managed to claw themselves back to the game as Brian Asaga touched down with Wokorach adding the extras for a 23-22 scoreline.Jerome Paarwater made a double substitution introducing Denis Karani and George Nyambua for Curtis Lilako and Simon Muniafu respectively.
Darwin Mukidza then took the scores to 26-23 through a penalty before Wokorach replied with a brace of penalties to tie the scores at 26-26.Uganda then got themselves another try Courtesy of Mike Wokorach with Philip Wokorach converting for a 33-26 lead but it only lasted a few minutes as the home side’s pressure payed off after being awarded a penalty try at the death ensuring the clash ended 33 all.
