Menengai Oilers began their Kenya Cup campaign with a win over Homeboyz RFC in a match held in Nakuru at the Nakuru Showground.

Coach Gibson Weru had several debutants in their game as the Oilmen managed to stage a comeback and win the game 43-13. Former Kenya Harlequins backrower and Kenyan international, Elkeans Musonye marked his debut in Oilers colours with a try even though he had been on the field for only a few minutes.

Other players who made their debuts include Celestine Mboi, Alvin Khavoli and Abdon Jadha. The coach gave Mboi signed from Daystar Falcons a rating of 8 out 10 due to his impressive carries and line-out throws.

“ I think Celestine on a scale of 10 I’ll give him an 8. He got all his lineout throws, and he also carried well and defended well. Alvin continued his good form, Elkeans again, scored despite being on the pitch for a few minutes. He also worked hard for the team. Happy days, we can only build on that and get better,” he told the club’s media.

Despite winning the game, Gibu was not impressed with the team’s discipline as his boys conceded many penalties during the game.

“A good victory to start the season, very good things that we have seen today. Our set pieces were solid, our defense did well towards the end and there was good game management. There are still areas that need addressing, especially our open play. We conceded so many attacking penalties which should not happen at this level. We also conceded a few penalties on defense which were not forced so those are some of the areas we need to work on this week before we take on Mwamba.” Said Weru on their game against Homeboyz.

Menengai are preparing for their second game against Mwamba as they are on their way to try to clinch the Kenya Cup.
