Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Oduor Gangla has backed the national 7s teams to perfom well at the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics slated to start in July 2021 in Japan.
Both Shujaa and their women counterparts, the Kenya Lionesses, recently took part in the Madrid 7s which was used as a warm up event ahead of the Summer Games with Gangla expressing satisfaction with the perfomance of both teams in the Spanish capital.
“Given that we haven’t had competitive rugby in about one year, the Madrid 7s tournament showed that we will be serious contenders at Olympics in July,” Gangla told the KRU website.
The Madrid tournament was played over two weekends between February 20 and 28 with Shujaa finishing as runners up to Argentina in both competitions while the Lionesses managed a sixth place finish in the first leg before improving to second in the next tournament after losing to Russia in the final.
“To the players who put their bodies on the line, to the technical benches led by Innocent Simiyu and Felix Oloo, I know it’s a lot of work to get the teams looking this good on the pitch but keep doing what you do knowing that the Board and our partners are fully behind you,” added Gangla.
Gangla, who was speaking during the homecoming breakfast of the two teams on Tuesday, assured that the national sides will be given the necessary support in the coming months ahead of their Asian trip.
“Special thank you to the Ministry of Sports who have been our anchor sponsors with these two teams ensuring we were able to honor the Madrid 7s as well as prepare for the Olympics. We shall continue liaising with the sports fund to ensure that the teams are well catered for as they continue with their preparations,” he said.
