Kenya lose to Russia in Madrid 7s final

Kenya Lionesses finished second at the Madrid 7s Tournament’s second leg after falling 19-0 to Russia in the final staged in Madrid on Sunday.

Lionesses who finished bottom last weekend, showed improved performance this weekend, winning one match in the round-robin stage and suffered a 12-10 loss to Poland while their match against Russia ended 17-5.

Heading to the final, Felix Oloo coached side was keen to revenge the loss and end the campaign on a high.  They however let in two tries in the first half and conceded one in the closing half.

Speedster Elen Zdrokova who bagged a hat-trick against Kenya last weekend split the Kenyan defence to score the opening try.

The Russians would then stretch the lead with Marina Kukina intercepting a pass to score the second try at the centre. The side would head to the break with a 12-0 lead for Russia.

From the break, Russia picked from where they left channelling the ball to the right-wing where Zdrokova cut inside to beat Janet Okello and paced on to earn her side a converted try that stretched the lead to 19-0.

Kenya Lionesses would defend better and avoid letting another try and the scored remained unchanged till the full-time whistle.
