Daniel Taabu was the hero as Kenya labored to claim a 19-17 win over Spain in the second leg of the Madrid 7s on Saturday.
It was a far from convincing perfomance from Kenya, who were on the brink of their third loss of the tournament before Taabu scored a converted try after the sound of the hooter to save his side from the jaws of defeat.
Kenya’s only defeats in Madrid so far have been inflicted by Argentina, who beat them twice in the first leg last weekend.
The Spaniards took a 12-7 lead to halftime after managing two tries and a conversion.
Following an underwhelming first half, Kenya, who had earlier beaten Portugal and USA, improved in the second half as they played on the front foot.
Their efforts paid off as a series of offloads saw William Ambaka score a converted try from a move started by Billy Odhiambo.
Spain retook their lead through a five pointer by Noel Carrion and just when it seemed like they would run away with the victory, Mwamba RFC halfback Taabu cut through the Spanish defense to score a converted try between the sticks.
