Prop Angus Ta’avao will return for the Chiefs in 2021 after extending his contract with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) for another season.
The 30-year-old debuted for the Gallagher Chiefs in 2018 against the Crusaders, becoming Gallagher Chief number 295. Later that year Ta’avao earned himself his first cap for the All Blacks debuting for the side against Argentina in Buenos Aries. The tighthead prop has since notched up 35 caps and fifteen points for the Gallagher Chiefs along with 14 caps and five points for the All Blacks.
Ta’avao said he was looking forward to joining the Gallagher Chiefs in the upcoming 2021 Sky Super Rugby Aotearoa and Trans-Tasman Competitions.
“I’m excited to be part of the 2021 Gallagher Chiefs team and represent our passionate region. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with the lads and our community”.
Chiefs Rugby Club CEO Michael Collins said it was great to have Ta’avao returning for the 2021 season.
“We are pleased to see Angus back to pull on the Gallagher Chiefs jersey for another season. He is a passionate Gallagher Chiefs team member and an outstanding contributor for the Club, both on and off the field.”
Ta’avao has successfully helped lead Auckland to challenge defending champions the Tasman Mako for the 2020 Mitre 10 Cup Premiership title at Eden Park on Saturday 28 November.
New Zealand Rugby General Manager Professional Rugby & Performance Chris Lendrum said it was pleasing to see Ta’avao continue his service and dedication to rugby.
“Angus started playing professional rugby in New Zealand a decade ago and has worked hard to improve his game and improve the teams he’s been a part of. He’s a great team man who adds real leadership to any team he plays for. It’s great to see him commit to another season. He will no doubt make a big contribution to the Chiefs and to New Zealand rugby in 2021.”
The 2021 Gallagher Chiefs Squad will be officially announced on Thursday 3 December.
