MMUST registered improved performance in each sector in 2019/20 season and they are just 80 minutes away from booking a slot in the top tier.
The side is scheduled to tackle the winner between Mean Machine and Egerton Wasps in the semis once the action is allowed to resume. A win in the semis will see them qualify for Kenya Cup.
In the first season in the KRU Championship, the Kakamega based side had a 62.5% winning rate, picking 10 wins and finished fifth on the log. They had 42 points, scored 306 points and conceded 195 in the regular season.
2019/20 campaign saw their winning rate rise to 93.75% losing just one game to Strathmore Leos who finished top. 15 wins in the campaign gave the side 67 points. The side scored 368 and conceded 119.
Reviewing the regular season, their Head Coach Dr Ochieng Ahaya pinned their improved run to working as a unit and discipline from his charges. He noted that his charges are quick to adapt to different tactics that coaching staff introduce and they execute the plans well.
“Discipline, working together and trying to make the boys a bit comfortable, we may not have so much but we use well what we have. Our training is a bit radical, we analyze and modify our tactics. We change our tactics and the good thing with the boys is they execute efficiently,” Ahaya told Scrummage.

The tactician who excelled at Kakamega School leading the side to three 15s titles, a double in FEASSSA 15s and four 7s titles and also won the KUSA 7s with MMUST is targeting to become a professor in the coming years a dream he says may not allow him to pursue coaching opportunity at National Team level.
“I have chosen, I want to be a professor in the next two years and its not a walk in the park. With what am doing I may not have time (to coach elsewhere apart from MMUST). In fact at MMUST, Asila does the donkey work, I only come to training twice a week, so I feel that is a road that diverged,” the tactician disclosed.
