The International Olympic Committee on Tuesday 24 March announced that the Olympic Games have been postponed till 2021.
According to the statement released by the IOC, they were forced to postpone the Olympics to safeguard the health of athletes and everyone who will be involved in the Tokyo 2020 Games.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games will now be expected to take place no later than summer 2021.
“In the present circumstances and based on the information provided by the WHO today, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of the XXXII Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021, to safeguard the health of the athletes, everybody involved in the Olympic Games and the international community,” reads part of the statement.
World Rugby has backed the decision to postpone the games stating that it is the right option at this time when the World is struggling to deal with Covid-19 epidemic
“World Rugby supports the prudent and necessary decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee to postpone the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”
“The health and safety of the athletes, fans, and everyone involved is our shared priority and responsibility and we believe the right decision has been taken in these very difficult and unprecedented circumstances.”

World Rugby had already postponed the London, Paris, Hong Kong and Singapore 7s.
