Western Bulls are the winners of the first edition of the UoE 10s aside tournament held at UoE Pavilion on Saturday and Sunday.
The Echulusi squad which comprised of current and some old boys beat hosts UoE Trojans 10-5 in a closely contested final played on Sunday. Two unconverted tries were enough to hand the Kakamega based side victory.
Nickson Nyandieka landed Bulls opener which saw them take a 5-0 lead to the break. In the final half, Isaac Wafula went over for the second try for Bulls to lead 10-0.
The hosts managed a late try via Harry Mahira but Bulls managed to hang on for the win. The side walked away with a trophy and cash prize.
To reach the finals Bulls beat ETTI 36-0 while UoE got a 21-0 over Nandi. Nandi managed a podium finish following a 15-5 over ETTI in third place playoffs. The runners up also received gift hampers from Mfalme Unga Limited.
According to the organizers, the second edition will be bigger and better. They are also planning to host a rugby 7s tournament inp partnership with Mfalme before the National 7s Circuit kicks off.
“Mfalme unga Limited has been a great supporter of rugby in Eldoret and has always come in when need be. We are planing to do something bigger and better in May just before the circuit begins,” UoE Manager and the tournament’s organizer told Scrummage.
“This is in a bid to build and develop rugby in Eldoret and its environs , the town is full of teams that has boys with potential and talent but several factors makes it hard for rugby to grow. I know one day we will have a united team that will grow to greater levels of rugby,” he added.
