Kenya suffer second defeat in Vancouver

Kenya 7s suffered a narrow 14-12 loss to Ireland in a Vancouver 7s pool C match played at  BC Place on Saturday.

Shujaa have now lost two matches in a row in this outing and their quarterfinal chances are now slim. This clash marked the first-ever loss to Ireland for Kenya since the former earned promotion early this season. Kenya had drawn 24-24 and won 29-12 in the last two meetings with Ireland this season.

kenya were forced to stay backfoot in the opening two minutes of the game and Mark Roche forced his way to the try line after Vincent Onyala was penalized for being offside.  Roche converted his own try to hand his side an early lead.

Onyala then became first Kenyan to score this weekend, touching down for a 7-5 trail. At the sixth minute, Billy Odhiambo ensured that Kenya led 12-5 after he took advantage of the uncovered right-wing to score the second try for Kenya 7s which was converted by Collins Injera from a tight angle.

Ireland’s Graham Curtis tied the scores at 12-12 after he struck just before halftime and Roche’s conversion restored Ireland’s lead.

On return from the break, Kenya 7s defended with their hearts outs led by Collins Injera to deny Ireland a chance to add more points. Hugo Lennox was yellow carded for tapping the ball while Kenya were in attack but despite having a one-man advantage, Kenya failed to close the two-point gap.

Kenya will face Spain in the final pool stage match on Sunday 4:07 AM.
