Kakamega edge Koyonzo to retain County 15s title

Kakamega High have retained the Kakamega County Secondary School Rugby 15s title after edging resilient Koyonzo 6-3 in a closely contested final played at St Peters Mumias Grounds on Saturday 7 March.

The Barbarians staged a comeback to beat Koyonzo in what was a repeat of last year’s county, regional and Prescott final. The East African champions found themselves behind after Emmanuel Oketch drilled in a drop goal to hand Koyonzo a 3-0 lead which they held on till halftime.

After the breather, Kakamega came back stronger and they levelled the scores after Wilberforce Ayiecha drilled in a penalty. Minutes later Philip Okeyo gave Kakamega the lead after he added three more points. It was after his drop goal attempt hit the target.

Gabriel Otieno was yellow-carded after a high tackle but Kakamega stood tall despite being a man down and emerged winners. The two sides are expected to represent the County in the regional games.
