Vihiga County Defending Champions Vihiga High School bagged the Yala 7s tournament played over the weekend at St Mary’s Yala beating Kaimosi College 19-12.
The side which is coached by Sebastian Makalek and Abdalla Abubakar scored three tries and converted two for the victory.
Eddy Wambugu -the tournament’s Most Valuable Player landed the first try for the side and belted in a conversion. Their Captain Abednego Onsongo grabbed two tries and ended the tournament as the top scorer.
Their opponent Kaimosi had two tries and converted one in the loss. Vihiga High beat Minimum High School 22-0 to reach the final of the competition while Kaimosi College eliminated Chianda High School 29-0 to reach the finals.
Yala Tournament is used by the majority of the schools in the Western Region to test their systems ahead of the School games.
Vihiga are warming up for the County school games which will commence on 16 February with Sub-county games. They are eyeing to qualify for the National School games set for Kapsabet and East African games slated for M-Pesa Foundation.
Last year they finished second in Western Region games after a 21-10 loss to St Peters Mumias while at the National 7s they were fourth after losing 19-5 to St Peter’s at the Coast.
