Impala hold off Nondies to stay on playoff track

Impala scored four tries on their way to see off neighbours Nondies 28-18 in a Kenya cup contest staged at the Impala grounds.

The hosts struck first through Bill Omondi, finishing off a huge shove by the Impala scrum that brought them close to the Nondies try line, Sammy Oliech adding the extra two to make it 7-0 early on. Steve Otieno then showed power and fury to fend of the attention of three Nondies defenders on his way to scoring in the corner. Oliech double sure  with his boot to drill in the resulting conversion.

Biko Adema put the first points on the board for Nondies as Impala missed another glorious chance on the other end as center referee Beryl Ochieng called for a held up. The Gazzelles then made sure the resulting scrum counted, Oliech muscling his way over before splitting the uprights to make it 21-3. Adema added a three pointer for the Rangers to make it 21-6 heading into the breather.

The Rangers scored first in the second stanza through the bulky under 20 Ace Ian Njenga who shoved his way through helpless Impala defenders off a lineout move, Adema missing the conversion to make it 21-11.

Mwenesi was on mark for the Rangers, going over the white chalk after grinding several phases under the posts to take the scores to 21-18, putting the game in course for an interesting finish.

The hosts stretched their lead as a rushing Anthony Odhiambo hit delivered the killer blow, latching onto an offload top a clean pair of heels to score in the corner, Oliech boldly stepping up to convert the try from the corner.
