MMUST boss Ochieng Ahaya is delighted to see consistent performance from his charges in the second tier as the push for playoffs continues to intensify.
The students have picked 10 wins out of the 11 matches played this season. They have won all their away matches and the lone loss of the season was against League Leaders Strathmore Leos at home. Ahaya is happy that his charges are now picking maximum points unlike in the opening games where they won but ended with just four points in each victory after failing to score at least four tries in each win.
Out of the 10 wins picked this season, MMUST have only four winning bonus points and one losing bonus points.
“We are number two. Initially, we were winning but we failed to pick winning bonuses in the opening games. Now we are getting bonus points and we have been consistent even in away games. Strathmore are eight points above us, if we would have beaten them here (in Kakamega) we would be comfortable right now,” Ahaya told Scrummage.
The coach is aiming to qualify directly for the semis after the regular-season phase and this will leave them with one game as the hurdle in their quest for a place in Kenya Cup. The coach feels if they maintain their form the semi-final target will be achieved but he is wary of their trip to USIU.
“If we can maintain this fine form in the upcoming five matches, we will have one crucial match against USIU and we must win against them in Nairobi to maintain position two. USIU are fighting for a place in the playoffs so we know they will be just as strong Catholic Monks were. So we will give our all to get a direct semi-final,” he added.
The Kakamega based side has 45 points, eight below Strathmore and 10 above Mean Machine who have a game in hand.
