During his stay at MMUST, scholarships were introduced to sports personalities and this saw MMUST win Nationwide and then reached the playoffs in their first season in the second tier.
The team also won 2019 KUSA 7s Title after a clean sweep in all the legs. They carried the form in the National 7s Circuit missing the quarters once.
He kept his role as the club patron despite leaving the University after just one term and his support has seen the side start the 2019/20 season impressively winning seven of the last eight matches.
MMUST captain Samuel Mbeche described him as a man who believed in better governance and played a major role in their success.
Mbeche feels their Patron has passed on at a time that club needed him most.
“Prof Otieno was a man who believed in better governance, I remember he came to the team back in 2017 when I approached him with a dream to make MMUST Rugby a gem, he believed in the dream and accorded us all the support which paid as we went unbeaten the whole season. Many got talent scholarship to further their studies that had seemed impossible. He made the MMUST a student-centred university and everyone loved him. He leaves at a time when we needed him most.RIP Mkaka,” Mbeche told Scrummage.
