University of Eldoret side Trojans edged Kisumu RFC 14-10 in a KRU Championship match staged at Mamboleo Grounds on Saturday afternoon.
After close to 15 minutes of action without scores, Trojans backrower Evans Wanjala made a powerful run and touched down for the visitors. Halfback Edwin Yatich added a conversion but failed add three more points after his penalty went wide.
Another run from Wanjala saw Trojans come close once again and Edison Yegon capitalized on a defence lapse and dived over for the second try of the game. Two points from fly half Yatich sent the scores to 14-0.
Kisimu RFC Centre Lenny Obiero reduced the deficit with a penalty kick as the halftime whistle drew closer. Kisumu would make several attempts to go forward but were kept at bay by Trojans tight defence that ensured the 14-3 scoreline remained unchanged by halftime.
Kisumu spent the better part of the final half fighting back. Their efforts paid off after minutes of hustle and a converted try from Newman Opiyo cut the gap to 14-10. The visitor however managed to hold on for a win.
In an early kick off friendly match played at the same venue Kabras II beat Kisumu II 20-5. The young Sugarmen scored four unconverted try while their host managed just one try in the match.
