Kenya 7s,Kenya 15s and Kenya Harlequins main Sponsor Sportpesa might withdraw its sponsorship after the high court dismissed a case by betting firms challenging the new betting regulations.
Betting companies had earlier moved to court with the aim of stopping the betting tax increase by 35 percent.
“I find and hold that the new taxes do not infringe on the petitioners’ rights to property since they are aimed at serving a legitimate public interest. The legislation was legally enacted and it overrides the legitimate expectations of the betting firms,”judge John Mativo said in his ruling.
The exit of the betting firm could be a huge blow to both the Kenya 7s and 15s side ahead of a busy 2018 schedule where the 7s side is expected to take part in the ongoing World 7s series as well as the Commonwealth games and sevens World Cup in San Fransisco,USA.
For the Kenya Simbas, they will be taking part in the qualifiers for the 2019 Rugby World Cup scheduled for Japan.
Sportpesa and the Kenya Rugby Union entered an agreement in 2016 following the exit of Kenya Airways and Tusker as Kenya 7s and 15s sponsors.
