Catholic University Monks head coach Edward Opiyo is confident that his young charges have what it takes to make a return to Kenya’s elite rugby 15s league, the Kenya Cup.

The side had a good outing at the just concluded Impala Floodlit tournament where they stunned the likes of Strathmore II and Blak Blad before narrowly going down to Menengai Oilers with a 25-20 score in the Varsities final.

“Last season we were two points shy off reaching the playoffs and this year we shall not be taking chances. Our target now is to reach the playoffs and earn promotion to the top tier,”Opiyo told Scrummage.

The side’s last appearance in the Kenya Cup was in the 2014/15 season in which they were relegated.

They get their Championship campaign underway with a university derby at home against Mean Machine today starting 1600hrs.
