Catholic University Monks head coach Edward Opiyo says that reaching the Impala Floodlit varsities final was their objective which they managed to achieve.

Enroute the final in which they lost 25-20 to Menengai Oilers,Opiyo’s charges had stunned Strathmore II in the quarters before causing another huge upset, ousting Kenya Cup side Blak Blad with a 27-22 scoreline in the semis.

“To me reaching the final was an achievement because we have not managed to do that in the last four years where  we have always been eliminated at the quarters and semi final stage.Considering we were playing a well established club,we gave a good account of ourselves,”Opiyo told Scrummage.

“Our main target was to reach the final and winning it would just have been a bonus. We believe next year we shall be ripe to scoop the gong,”he further noted.

The university side are now set for the 2017/18 Championship season that gets underway on Saturday 25 November. They play their first match against University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine.
