Kenya Simbas kicked of the Cup of Nations campaign with a 23-3 loss to South America side Chile in a match played on Friday 10 November in Hong Kong.

The Simbas spent the better part of opening minutes on a back-foot and Chile’s pressure paid off at the 16th minute. The Chileans won a penalty that was converted by fullback Tomas Ianiszewski for a 3-0 lead.

Slim lead

The slim lead lasted for close to 10 minutes and Kenya finally equalized following a penalty converted by assistant skipper Darwin Mukidza.

Three minutes before the halftime break, Ianiszewsk sent in a penalty which saw the South America side open a three point gap.

In the final half, Chile got the chance to add extra three points on their lead but their kicker Ianiszewski failed to hit the target. Minutes later Chile registered the first ever try of the game.

Santiago Videla’s grabber left Kenya’s backline well beaten and Ianiszewski raced and touched down for an 11-3 lead before he added the extras for a 13-3 scoreline.

Benjamin Boto perfect carry saw the side extended the scores with the second try while Ianiszewski added the extras and a penalty for a 23-3 win.

Kenya will now face Russia in the second match of the cup of Nations. The match will be played on Tuesday 14.
