Former Kenya 7s play-maker Lavin Asego has picked the 2010 Safari 7s triumph as his memorable moment in the competition.
That year saw Sydney Ashioya replace injured Collins Injera and went on to score two tries including a sudden death try that saw Kenya edge Emerging Boks 17-12 and retained the Safari 7s title for the third time in a row.
The Mwamba Rugby club star who played a major role in Kenya 7s win that year was impressed by the crowd that turned out for the tournament which up to to date remains his best.
“The crowd was always amazing and I usually took time to look around the stadium and soak in the atmosphere. My enduring memory of the tournament at RFUEA was beating the Emerging Boks in the 2010 final with torrential rain pouring. Ashy (Sidney Ashioya) scored the winning try in extra time, he was quoted by KRU.
The half back revealed that he always wanted to be as good as Jeff Vilembwa a fly half he watched play in 2002. His debut at the Safari 7s came a year later and for him it was an amazing feeling ever.
” I first played at the Safari Sevens in 2003 at the RFUEA Ground and featured for Shujaa, which was the Kenyan second string side at the tournament .It was an amazing feeling because just a year earlier I remember watching it on television and telling myself I want to replace Jeff Vilembwa who was the flyhalf in that Shujaa squad at the time.” He added.
” If we can get the RFUEA crowd over to Kasarani then we have a world class tournament worthy of the world series.”
This years Safari 7s edition will be in November.
