Olympic Rugby 7s to go beyond 2020

The executive board of the International Olympic committee announced that all the games that featured in last year’s Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro will be retained for the 2024 edition.
This essentially implies that the shorter version of the game is set to be part of the next two editions of the olympic games starting with Tokyo,Japan in 2020.
“In another decision regarding the Olympic programme, the Executive Board approved the overall composition of the sports programme for the Olympic Games 2024 to include all 28 sports on the programme of the Olympic Games Rio 2016,” the committee said.
The International Olympic Committee is yet to announce the host nation for the 2024 showpiece although that is expected to be known between 11th and 12th of next month when they are expected to convene a special sitting.
“While the IOC Session will ultimately consider this recommendation, World Rugby, like the entire global rugby family, is very excited by today’s Executive Board’s recommendation,”said World rugby chairperson Bill Beaumont after the announcement was made.
“I would like to thank the IOC President Thomas Bach and the IOC Executive Board for placing their continued trust in rugby, and our national member unions, players and passionate fans for making sevens the best it can possibly be,”he added.
